VanMoof Smart Cartridge Overview

The VanMoof Smart Cartridge is an electronic component used in all electrified models of VanMoof bikes such as the S1, X1, S2, X2, S3, X3, S4, X4, S5, A5, S6 and S6 Open. It controls all e-components of the bike such as battery, motor, e-Shifter, kick lock.

Required tools to get the Smart Cartridge out of the bike 

  • Anti-theft Torx key T30 (included in a Vanmoof Toolbox)
  • Anti-theft Torx key T8
  • Torx key T6

Smart Cartridge swap procedure

Before the swap

Please send the following details:

  • Bike model. Example: S2, X2, S3, X3, S5, A5, S6, S6 Open,...
  • If the bike has Apple Find My feature. It can be validated in the VanMoof application under the 'Advanced' menu (Settings - Advanced - scroll down to the 'About' section): if there is the 'Find My Firmware' version presented, you have Apple Find My feature. Additionally, it can be identified by checking the ‘Apply Find My’ sticker nearby the charging port of the bike.

What to expect from the swap

When you receive a reply that the Smart Cartridge for the swap is available, please do the following steps:

  1. Remove your broken Smart Cartridge
  2. Send the Smart Cartridge to provided address
  3. When it is received and an initial diagnostic completed, there are two possible scenarios:
    1. You don't need to swap to another Smart Cartridge, and repair of your original Smart Cartridge is required. In this scenario, the final cost will be significantly reduced. To perform the final testing of the Smart Cartridge, it will be required to add an additional rider to your Vanmoof account.
    2. You need to perform the swap to another working Smart Cartridge. It is required to generate a new QR code to provide ownership of your Smart Cartridge to us. When the swap is completed, you will receive the ownership back with the working Smart Cartridge.
  4. Receive a working Smart Cartridge linked to your VanMoof account.

How to open the Smart Cartridge

  1. Unscrew the main power screws (indicated by circular markers in the image below)
  2. Carefully disconnect the three connectors (highlighted by pink rectangles)
  3. Remove the screws securing the main board (indicated by arrows)
